BFI South American season.

'Film Making Across South America '
Click for full details

This August, the BFI is exploring the recent renaissance of filmmaking across South America. The re-emergence of national cinemas has coincided with a tide of genuine political democracy that has swept the continent.

Highlights of the season include Bolivia, an early example of New Argentine Cinema, which deals with the country’s uneasy relationship with its South American immigrants and City of God, a sprawling, engrossing account of the rise of drug gangs in Rio.

Click for full details

3.30pm Sun 27 June LA HIJA DEL GENERAL
Despite being a socialist, a single parent and an agnostic, Dr. Michelle Bachelet succeeds in becoming the first woman President of Chile, one of South America’s most conservative nations, and captures the attention of the world’s press with her singularly female way of engaging with politics.

5.00pm Sun 27 June THE KIDNAPPING OF INGRID BETANCOURT
In 2002, two filmmakers travelled to Colombia to document the campaign of controversial presidential candidate, Ingrid Betancourt, who was risking her life by denouncing Colombian politicians linked to drug cartels. As her family pleaded with the Colombian people for solidarity, Ingrid spent Election Day deep in the Colombian jungle—a hostage.
PLUS DISCUSSIONS hosted by Oscar Guardiola (Colombian writer and cultural critic) with:
Lorna Scott Fox a journalist and critic who lived in Chile as a diplomat’s child and has written about the situation of Chile under President Michelle Bachelet, from a woman’s perspective;

Mauricio Rodríguez Múnera the current Ambassador of Colombia in UK and was Founder a of Portafolio, Colombia’s most prominent economic newspaper.

Sand Blast Charity Presents.
3 corners of the world concert
' From 3 Corners of the World. Nov 22, London'
Click for full details

On Nov 22, London-based arts and human rights charity Sandblast presents "From 3 Corners of the World" a triple bill folk/rock gig at the East London club CARGO, in aid of the Saharawi refugees from Western Sahara. The concert is headlined by the celebrated ZEEP band, who are releasing their second album "People and Things", and aims to draw attention to the invisibility of the Saharawis plight. It is raising funds for the charity\'s Saharawi Artist Fund, which finances projects in the refugee camps for cultural and economic empowerment through the arts. Nearly 200,000 Saharwis have been refugees in the Algerian desert since 1976.

The tropical sounds of the UK band ZEEP will be joined by Luzmira Zerpa (Venezuela) with her Afro-Latin fusion ensemble Family Atlantica, and guitarist and singer/songwriter Henry Blake (New Zealand). Zeep, who have been involved with Damon Albarn\'s Africa Express project, will visit the Saharawi refugee camps for the first time next February to give a solidarity concert on the 10th anniversary of the Saharamarathon. Henry Blake and Luzmira Zerpa have both visited the camps and collaborated with Aziza Brahim, a powerful new voice to emerge from Western Sahara, who performed at the 7th African Music Festival at the Southbank in September.

The proceeds will go towards setting up a professional mobile recording studio in the camps and training to Saharawis to use it. Due to long term exile many of the oral and musical traditions are being lost. The project aims to give the Saharawis the means and skills to record, promote and express their rich heritage and help generate an income.

Date: Sunday, November 22, 2009
Time: 7.30pm until 11pm,
Venue: CARGO, East London
Entry: £12 standard ticket, £10 NUS and advanced tickets (www.justgiving.com/sandblasttickets)
