Back Packers Guide to Eastern Europe

Considering a backpacking trip? Have you thought about backpacking across Eastern Europe? Eastern Europe is increasing in popularity with backpackers due to the great sites and are quite a bit less cost-wise than their western counterparts. Although backpacking is a little different than other backpacking trips, the traveler will have a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

This quick guide will give you an idea of what areas of Eastern Europe you will want to include in your trip.

Czech Republic
Prague is full of cobblestone streets dating back to medieval times and makes for a great stop on your backpacking trip. The first Budweiser, made at the Budvar Brewery, is locate at Ceske Budejovice. Continue on and visit the Urquell Brewery in Plzen.

A highlight to backpacking in the Czech Republic is visiting Cesky Krumlov, exploring the city itself and maybe, if you enjoy that kind of thing, take a kayak ride down the river.

A famous bone church called Kutna Hora is a must stop to see how silver was mined in the 16th century and to enjoy the medieval landscape.

Backpacking in Russia
So much to see! Enjoy the huge palaces in St. Petersburg, called the 'Venice of the North', or backpack across Lapland Biosphere Reserve. The reserve is home to reindeer, wolves, elk and maybe a few bears!

While in Russia, a stop on your backpacking trip must include Moscow. Wandering the streets of the Red Square has numerous surprises to the traveler and a highlight to this city is visiting the Kremlin. Since Russia is known for their Vodka, take a day and try to sample the various types of Vodka.

Backpacking Poland
A backpacking trip in Eastern Europe is not complete without a trip to Poland. Warsaw's Old Town also has cobblestone streets and unique out of the way shops and cafes for any packpacker to enjoy.

If you enjoy kayaking or would like to try it, take a trip on the Krutynia River, which is the most popular with quite a few hostels and stops that make for a fun and enjoyable experience.

A stop at Auschwitz is a must for any backpacker since part of the backpacking experience is to delve into local history. This part of history should not be forgotten.

Festivals, caves and forests can all be included in your Eastern Europe backpacking trip.

Bulgaria
The Rila Monastery, founded in 927 AD, should be included in your backpacking journey. The monastery is located on the Rila Mountains so a bit of hiking will be in order.

Stop at Nesbar, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, and enjoy all the archeological sites and beaches.
The Black Sea Coast is a great stop to rest up while soaking up the local scenery and history.

As with any backpacking trip, plan your route with places to stay in mind. The hostels are great places to stay with a minimal amount of money and to meet fellow travelers in order to exchange stories and experiences. You will be able to find other places to include in your backpacking journey that others have visited.

Since it is cheaper than a western backpacking trip you just may be able to plan an even longer trip so you can really enjoy even more sites not included above. This could include castles, spas, bike tours, renaissance buildings, a turn of the century railway and churches dating all the way back to the 13th century.

Go ahead and get excited about planning a backpacking trip to Eastern Europe. It is certain that you will not be disappointed.
