A Brief History of the United Kingdom

A Brief History of the United Kingdom
The history of the United Kingdom is rich and vibrant. To understand its history, you need to start by reviewing how the Kingdom of England was formed. In 1155, Pope Adrian IV issues the papal bull laudabiliter. The word laudabiliter literally means “in a praiseworthy manner”. The papal bull gave the Norman King Henry II of England lordship over Ireland. It was asserted as giving the authority for Henry to take possession of Ireland.

In the year 1277, England began its conquest of Wales led by Edward I. He is also known as Edward Longshanks for being 6 feet 2 inches tall. His victory led to the signing of the Treaty of Aberconwy, which placed Wales under England rule.

So at the 16th century, there were two states in Great Britain. The first was the Kingdom of England, which included Wales and controlled Ireland. The other was the Kingdom of Scotland.

Scotland and England were united in March of 1603 in what is known as the Union of the Crowns. This happened when James VI, king of Scots, ascended to the throne of England. England and Scotland continued to be independent states although they both shared the king. This union was personal rather than political.

Full political union between the two kingdoms began much later in 1706 when the historic Treaty of Union was agreed upon. The Treaty of Union was ratified on May 1, 1707 and became known as the Acts of Union 1707. These acts officially joined the Kingdom of England (without Ireland) with the Kingdom of Scotland. Together, they formed the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

As one studies the history of the United Kingdom, it is interesting to note that Ireland did not officially merge with the United Kingdom of Great Britain until 1800. This is when the Act of Union (1800), sometimes known as the Act of Union 1801 merged the two kingdoms to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 1919, the Irish Republic made a declaration of independence from the British government. This resulted in the Irish War of Independence, otherwise known as the Anglo-Irish War or Tan War. The war ended in July of 1921. After the war ended, negotiations between the two sides led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. This treaty ended British rule in most of Ireland.

The treaty created the Irish Free State on December 22, 1922. The treaty provided Northern Ireland with an option to opt out of the Irish Free State. Northern Ireland exercised its option, thus remaining part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The name continued in 1927 when it was renamed as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This was a result of the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act 1927. This was in official recognition that the rest of Ireland had seceded from the kingdom.
